Reflections of a Mountain Grouse Hunter: An Introduction

What follows in these pages is a collection of reminiscences from the Appalachian grouse coverts that have shaped my dogs and me.  Fair warning:  I am an opinionated man.  My good wife Anna chides me for my perfectionist nature.  But when a man is passionate about something, he should not settle for anything but the best he can do. I do not pretend to have all the answers on grouse, grouse dogs, and grouse hunting...but nearly forty years gunning for ruffed grouse in these mountains have given me stout ideas about what has worked for my dogs and me and for some of the good men who have shared their knowledge and time with me over those years.  I have been relentless in seeking out those people who have made their love of grouse hunting into an art form, and I am indebted for their sharing.  I hope you will enjoy reading a little about what these mountains and ruffed grouse and great Llewellin setters have taught me about this grand sport.
